Ebb & Flow
Your training and life has an ebb and flow to it. There are times of exertion and times of recovery. Times of activity and times of rest. For instance, at our local Krav academy, we just got finished with a testing rotation. Testing rotations are a couple months of longer, harder training for all of us at the academy. It can get pretty intense for folks. At the end of the training period we have a big 4ish hour test. A gauntlet really that everyone goes through. Afterward we chill things out again. Our training slows down and eases up. We go from exerting a lot of effort. Working on a lot of gross motor skill drills. Lots of PT and higher intensity training. However, most folks, myself included, can’t safely or comfortably keep up that pace. It’s not sustainable. You have to… |
Chill Out for a While… |
Your training has seasons to it. You have to learn to ebb and flow. Learning different things at different times. Your life’s that way too. There are times of exertion and times to recover. Times of high activity and down times. Time to work on the family and times to work on yourself. Yes, of course it’s hard to fit it all in. It’s not like life is going to stop while you slow your roll. Nope, you have to take it upon yourself to make time for it… If you don’t, it just won’t happen. Life will keep plodding forward. The world doesn’t stop or even slow down, you have to develop the habit to take care yourself in a healthy, responsible, balanced way. Simple, not easy! |
Creating Your Own Current?! |
We are all equally caught up in the flow of life. We don’t have control over everything that happens to us. However, as an old saying goes, “We can’t control the wind, but we can adjust our sails.” And so it is for our lives as well. Staying in tune with the tides of our life and ourselves is important for your training and application of your skills. The perfect technique deployed at the wrong time isn’t going to be successful. Knowing when and when not to do something is more important then the thing itself. Understanding the strategy of training, defending and life itself is an important skill to have. Too many people look at their training like a sporting event. Like a duel. Don’t get me wrong, it can look like that sometimes, however if that’s the only way you view your training, you’re really missing the boat! |
A Practice and a Study… |
Good training will train more than only your physicality. We have a saying at the academy: Train your… Body like a soldier Mind like a general Mouth like a diplomat Heart like a protector Only one part of your training is physical. The other three quarters of it should be revolving around other aspects of Life. You’re physical training needs to fit your season as well. If you’re in your 40’s still trying to train like you were when you were when you were in your 20’s, you won’t be training for very long. Learning how to protect yourself and your family is more than just a physical endeavor. Your training should reflect the full spectrum of skills. |
