You Gotta Have Faith
Just like that old George Michaels song… Or was it Wham?! I forget. I think it was his solo artistry. Anyway, what does that song have to do with your training?! A lot really! |
You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know. |
There is risk in any endeavor. New journey’s are thwart with uncertainty. Let’s face it, from the get go, you are taking a leap of faith of varying degrees. It’s no different when it comes to your self defense training either! There are risks, the first being the people and approach you decide to train with/in. Yes sir, you have to trust the people you’re training with. You have to trust the instructor and the approach (aka - System) too, if you’re ever really going to get anywhere. Now I’m not talking blind unabashed loyalty here. Don’t let someone talk you into anything stupid. Don’t go joining some crazy cult or drink the purple kool aid. The difficulty is here though is at the beginning, you don’t know what you don’t know, and often times by the time you figure things out it’s might be too late. No, that’s not some doom and gloom ploy to get a reaction out of you. It’s simply that your first experience has a tremendous amount of influence over your perspective. That could be bad or good. the problem is that it can be hard to tell at first. |
Forest for the Trees!? |
You ever heard that saying?! Can’t see the forest for the trees is basically saying that sometimes you’re too close to something to see if for what it is. And that’s exactly what can happen after you get indoctrinated into something. We can quickly become biased to the way “we” do it. That can be good and bad. Buyer beware so to speak. |
Counterintuitive… |
When it comes to learning how to be a PeaceWalker, things don’t always appear how they are. Somethings are very counterintuitive. Up can be down and down up sometimes. Sometimes it’s safer to go closer to the danger. Remember what the good book said?! “Love your enemy.” Really, how is THAT a good strategy for protecting yourself?! Or how about just trying to go fast won’t help you to become really fast. You know the whole “Slow is Smooth and Smooth is Fast.” thing. Well, it applies in a lot of things really! It’s easy to wreck yourself (and others) when you are training how to protect and defend… or simply just train the wrong things. It’s not just about the physical techniques either. There is more to it. Now… You can go about your training on your own or with folks who don’t have too much experience and see where that gets you (often times hurt and in the wrong direction). It’s better to have someone help you figure things out. But who!? (Obviously I’m biased… Regardless, get someone who seems credible, skilled (in those things you want to be skilled at), going in right direction (same direction you want to be going in), and you resonate with them and those they keep company with. And then, here’s the hard part… |
You Gotta Have Some Faith! |
I’m not talking blind faith here. Trust is built, but sometimes were you’re going you don’t know exactly how to get there and you may not see the bigger picture. So once you’ve committed yourself to your path and developed some relationships have some faith in those you put your trust into. (again, not blind faith!). |
Trust the Process |
Let’s say you decide to lose some weight and get in shape. You choose a trainer and method for each… So, you took that first step. You stop eating all the stuff you use to AND you begin working out in the manner proposed by your trainer. The next several days you’re hungry, tired and sore… But hopeful that you’re getting ‘Results!’ So, after a few days of your work and sacrifice, you step up on that scale to mark your progress… And… Nothing!!!!!! That’s right. Not only are you not any stronger, but you’re not any lighter either. You could quit and start another program… And you’d just go through this process an infinite number of times with the same result. It’s not until you actually commit yourself to one thing, do the work and trust the process that you’ll actually begin seeing the results your are looking for. This journey may take several weeks, months , or maybe even *gulp* years, until you begin seeing the differences you seek. |
Trust |
Find a teacher and a system that’s credible, one that’s on the same track you are and resonates with you… and have some faith. You may not understand everything they’re sharing yet. You may not understand what they have you do completely, but give it a chance, hang in there (within reason of course) and Keep Going! |
