There'll Be Days...

A Day. A Week. A Month. A Year.

You know you’re going to have one…

A bad day.

Sometimes that bad day turns into a bad week…

Or month.

Sometimes it’s a really f-d up year.

Heck, I know some people who say that they’ve had a bad decade!?

Wow! Now that’s a kick in the head!

It Doesn’t Stop

You ever get this feeling, or is it just me?!

My guess is that you get this too. Right!?

It happens in training...

Like this year, I had a lot of challenges getting out to Jersey to train with Jack. I’ve made it out a few times, but not like usual. I had stuff come up. Getting sick, kid’s graduations, seminar rescheduling, etc. etc.

This just was a bit of an “off year” so to speak for getting out to train out there.

I’ve had other ‘off years’ training, due to injuries, surgery & rehab, work, family or relationship stuff, and other Life stuff!

…Or I hit a plateau, became stagnant, got in a bad headspace.

As we both know, in Life as in training.

You can have a crap day, or week…

I have some friends who have had bad years because of sickness, deaths, divorces, legal issues, you know, some major life issues.

What Can You Do?!

Realize that even within that bad day/week/month/year, there are some good moments. It’s not ALL bad!

Learn to look for the light between the cracks.

I know this can be difficult sometimes, but as that shirt says…

Don’t let the hard days win!

I know that I’ve posted that one up before, but it’s a good one!

Another thing to do is to look for the good in your Life. Who and what are you grateful for?!

It can be difficult sometimes to look at the bright side. I certainly know that I can get into my moods where it’s difficult to see past that dark, foreboding, negativity.

What then huh?!

Change your state…

No I don’t mean head for the boarder, I’m talking about your mental / emotional / physical state.

If you can, exercise, or do some deep breathing, maybe take a nap.

Do something to change your physical state. That can often help to change your emotional state. That’s one of the benefits of training martial arts. The physical activity alone can help you “clear the slate” so to speak.

Another thing you can do is to intentionally Focus on Something Else.

Take training for instance. If you are feeling stagnant or burned out. You could choose to take a break, or…

You could try focusing on something different. If you’ve been doing empty hand training, than maybe work on some weapons. If you’ve been concentrating on stand up striking, than maybe it’s time to work on take downs or ground defense. If you typically wear a t-shirt, maybe work on some jacket stuff… You get the idea.

If you practice a well rounded system, you should have plenty of modalities to choose from.

Inspiration in a Bottle?!

There’s this thing called Youtube and on it are literally millions of videos (about 30k hours are uploaded every hour!)… Anyway, get off facebook, tiktok and insta and go find a motivating youtube video from Sean Stephenson or Nick Vujicic. These two guys are amazing and by normal standards (whatever that is) they both have some serious physical limitations.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget about all of the good in our Lives and just focus in on the negative. Same goes with our training. It’s easy to see it something we "should do” rather than something we “Get to Do!”

No Matter What…

Regardless what suggestion you put into play…

KEEP GOING!

Nothing lasts forever.

Whatever it is remember…

This too shall pass!
