Look Before Crossing the Street?

Embracing this PeaceWalker Lifestyle is a stretch for some folks.

Some people don’t understand the balance. The balance of Life. So, they suffer the consequences.

Crossing the Street

When I was a kid my mom & dad taught me how to cross the street. They told me to Stop, Look & Listen. Look both ways before walking onto the street.

Am I showing disrespect, distrust and ill will toward those drivers when I look both ways before crossing the street?

I believe it to not only responsible but also acting in service to those drivers as well.

Would those drivers try to stop from hitting that pedestrian who walked into traffic without looking?

Yes, I believe most would if they were in a position to.

What about those drivers who might try to intentionally hit the pedestrian? Extremely rare, but it does happen.

Regardless, for everyone’s best interest, it’s reasonable and responsible to look both ways before crossing the street, so you lessen the chance of getting hit.

For those who don’t have the capacity, namely children and people with disabilities, we have crossing guards. These are people who act as agents of safety for those who can’t do it for themselves.

Is This the Same?!

There are a lot of similarities between learning how to cross the street and taking some rudimentary precautions to protecting yourself and others.

Sometimes I get pushback from people…

Some say that I’m teaching people how to be violent, distrusting, or militant.

Nothing can be further from the truth.

Training to protect yourself (and others) increases your ability to live more peaceful, loving, compassionate and open.

Less Stress & More Success?!

Nothing much gets done in an environment that is unsafe and full of stress, conflict and violence.

We are not as productive if we live in this fear. We can’t perform or concentrate as well. We make worse decisions. It’s not a good environment for productivity or learning (other than maybe how to get out of that environment).

So, it behooves us to know how to handle conflict and violence inside of and around us.

Who’s Responsible?!

I’ll reflect that back to you…

Who’s responsible when you walk out into traffic? The driver of the cars or the pedestrian?

I’ll tell you this…

I teach my kids to stop, look and listen before they cross that potentially dangerous street.

I also expect that from people who are considered leaders. If you can’t provide a safe environment for the people who you are leading, you’re not a leader.

This training that we practice is for the safety of others as well as ourselves.

Because…

Everywhere I walk everyone is a little bit safer because I am there.

That’s impossible to do when you don’t look both ways before you cross the street…

Protecting IS Respecting

This idea of being a protector is in service of others.
