When the Sun Comes Up, You'd Better Be Running!

Image
In a weird way the above saying reminds me of Plato's quote, "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle." No matter how big or small our battles may seem to others, for each of us they are important and can sometimes feel overwhelming . I am often asked if there is a way to gain perspective and clarity? I myself think about this on more than a few occasions throughout the day. Finding peace, serenity and clarity take more than facebook posts of catchy phrases, philosophies and quotes (like the one I posted at the top of this page). Trying to "figure it out" in the moment can also be a recipe for disappointment, especially if your already overwhelmed. True peace and serenity is about developing habits that bring serenity, clarity and peace. Something I call Foundational Grounding .  Here are some habits to help establish & maintain this Grounded-ness: Sleep / Rest Regular Exercise Balanced Diet Quiet Time / Medita...

Here we are on the FRONT PAGE of the Trentonian ( www.tentonian.com ) as they reported on the September workshop that we taught out in New Jersey.  If you are wondering who WE are, I'm referring the work I do with Jack Hoban's organization: Resolution Group International (RGI). Click HERE for names and more RGI info.  We once again had the privileged to work with police officers from about 11 different departments from New Jersey and New York (not to mention my fellow RGI com-padres who it is always great to see and work with).   Read the entire article HERE.

Ugly the Cat

Image
Everyone in the apartment complex where I lived knew who Ugly was. Ugly was the resident tomcat. Ugly loved three things in this world: fighting, eating garbage, and shall we say, love. The combination of these things combined with a life spent outside had their effect on Ugly. To start with, he had only one eye and where the other should have been was a hole. He was also missing his ear on the same side, his left foot appeared to have been badly broken at one time, and had healed at an unnatural angle, making him look like he was always turning the corner. Ugly would have been a dark gray tabby, striped type, except for the sores covering his head, neck and even his shoulders. Every time someone saw Ugly there was the same reaction. "That's one UGLY cat!!!” All the children were warned not to touch him, the adults threw rocks at him, hosed him down, squirted him when he tried to come in their homes, or shut his paws in the door when he would not leave. Ugly alway...

We Need More Ethical Protectors

Law Enforcement Officials:  We Need More Ethical Protectors  (The Trentonian News)   As many of you who follow me and/or train with me know about Jack Hoban and Resolution Group International (RGI). Well, here is an article that the Trentonian did on the last workshop that we taught out in New Jersey.  I had the privileged to work with police officers from about 11 different departments from New Jersey and New York (not to mention my fellow RGI com-padres who it is always great to see and work with).  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SPRING LAKE — Nationally, the names Michael Brown, Rodney King and Eric Garner are synonymous with police brutality; while locally, the names Lael Queen , Michele Roberts, Darrell Griffin and Tyrell Green remind residents of excessive force. It seems like just about every week there’s a media report about a law enforcement official who’s accused of making an unethical dec...

Live Your Life

Image
So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide. Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and grovel to none. When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself. Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of its vision. When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more tim...

And ONE Technique to Rule them All...

Image
Who doesn't want ONE thing to answer all of their woes? In martial arts I hear it all the time, people looking for that ONE technique that will be The Answer to every threat they come across. However this quest is not only isolated to the martial arts world, oh no, this search has been capitalized on and exploited for as long as there has been someone around to believe it.  The ONE may be called by other names, like The Best, The Only, The Greatest or (one of my favorites), The True!       No, I am not going to start a big debate about politics, religion, or martial arts. I just want to make a point on how we often seek simple, black and white answers to life's not so black and white, simple, but not easy reality. People often look for that ONE absolute answer to their questions and when they think they found "IT" they believe that it is their and everyone else's ...

Two Wolves

Image
An old Cherokee told his grandson, "My son, there is a battle between two wolves inside all of us. One is evil. It is anger, jealous, greed, resentment, inferiority, lies and ego. The other is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, humility, kindness, empathy and truth." The boy thought about it and asked, "Grandpa, which wolf will win?" The old man quietly replied, "The one you feed." ~Author unknown
